Space racer

A game for Spaceship Game Jam 2025

This is a simple space racing game made in one weekend for the Spaceship Game jam 2025, in collaboration with ESA (European Space Agency). 

You control a spaceship flying on a track marked by round gates. Stay inside the track, fly through the gates, and try to get the fastest lap time you can. Start and end of the track are marked by a bigger gate. Lap times are shown on the right side. 

How to play

There are enemy ships. There are no fancy menus or an end screen. 

  • WASD + mouse
    • Mouse sets viewpoint and turns the ship left/right, up/down
    • W and  S keys accelerate and decelerate
    • A and D keys roll the camera and spaceship left and rig
  • Space bar give you speed boost.
  • Number keys 0 and 1 switch between two music tracks
  • Volume up and down works also on volume control.
  • p toggle autopilot
  • f toggle fps
  • Inverted mouse controls: toggle with the i key

The game was made directly in Three.js, without a game engine. Graphics were made in Blender, exported using GLTF. 

The space theme, extra missions

The game jam gave additional missions (topics/themes), like gravity.

The original idea was to have gravitational bodies pulling you towards themselves as you fly close to them. However, we did not have time for that. The direction and strength of the pull would have been indicated by showing moving, floating particles which show the direction and strength of the pull. They'd have existed in the game world, but could theoretically have also been created using XR.

In space, there realistically wouldn't be any friction, just momentum. We added friction because controls were really hard without it.
